About Heidi

Heidi Urness combines deep legal expertise with a passion for advancing growth in the cannabis industry. Over more than a decade, she has become a trusted advisor to businesses navigating complex regulatory, transactional, and licensing challenges, helping clients not only meet legal requirements but strategically position themselves for long-term success.

Heidi’s influence extends far beyond her client work. She is actively engaged in shaping industry standards and policy through her participation in leading professional organizations. Heidi serves on the Banking & Financial Services Committee of the National Cannabis Industry Association, is a member of the Cannabis Marketing Association, and participates in the International Cannabis Bar Association (INCBA). She is also a member of NORML, Women Empowered in Cannabis (WEIC), and the Washington State Bar Association’s Cannabis Law Section, and she has also served on the WSBA’s Editorial Advisory Committee.

Through these roles, Heidi connects with industry leaders, regulators, and legal and industry professionals, sharing insights, fostering collaboration, and advocating for clear, consistent, and responsible legal frameworks. She regularly speaks at conferences, educational forums, and industry events, contributing to a dialogue that empowers women and emerging leaders in cannabis while promoting compliance and ethical business practices across the sector.

Heidi’s thought leadership is matched by her recognition from peers and industry observers alike. Her work reflects not only legal acumen but a commitment to elevating the cannabis industry’s credibility and supporting the growth of businesses that operate responsibly, strategically, and with integrity.

In addition to her practice — rooted in rigorous legal research, persuasive writing, and effective oral advocacy, skills recognized through honors such as the Burton Distinguished Legal Writing Award, Chambers “Notable Practitioner”, and multiple selections by Super Lawyers — Heidi is a Professor of Legal Research, Writing, and Analysis at the University of San Francisco School of Law. As a Professor (and proud USF Don herself), Heidi also mentors junior attorneys and law students, offering detailed, constructive feedback on legal writing and analysis as well as oral advocacy to help cultivate the next generation of skilled advocates and ethical leaders in the law.
